I couldn’t help but feel sorry for Fran; this was one hell of a way to find out that your son’s father was probably dead. I didn’t know what to say or do for her. I didn’t have to think on the subject too long as the strong black woman in her came out. I recognized the look in her eyes as the same look Niecy had whenever the chips were down and she was about to brush the dirt off her shoulders.
She blew her nose on my handkerchief that was neatly tucked in my blazer’s pocket got up and brushed down her suit. I took note that she placed her gun gently in her hand bag as if she just might need it again later. I watched as I saw strength returning to her pained body as if she were being blown up like a balloon.
“Thank you, Adam. Thank you for being his friend and looking after him all these years.” There was sweet sincerity in her voice as she spoke to me.
I wanted to protest that no thanks were necessary and as soon as I cleared my throat to attempt and do so she silenced me with her hand and the gentle shaking of her head from side to side.
“You were here for him when I was not. For that, I am eternally grateful.”
“Fran, what are you going to do, where are you going to go?” I was genuinely concerned.
“I can’t stay here, we can’t stay here, and there is nothing for us here.”
“But you just can’t, I mean, I wish.” The words came stammering out and did not make any sense.
“It’s OK, I have taken care of my son all these years just fine, I will continue to do so.”
“Where are you staying?” It was a dumb question to ask.
“With friends.” She smiled as if I should have known better than to inquire.
“Please be careful, even though I just met you, I could not stand to lose you, too.” I meant that. She placed a tender hand on my cheek.
“When are you leaving?” I couldn’t help but continue on with my questions for this woman who had been such a mystery to us all.
“I don’t know.”
“Is there anything, anything at all that I or my family can do for you?”
Fran paused and looked away in deep thought before returning her eyes to mine. “Could you talk to my son, could you let him know what a good man his father was before the drugs and The Organization? Could you tell him so that I don’t lose him, too?”
My heart ached at her simple request.
“Of course, that’s the least I could do. It would be an honor and privilege, remember, I loved James like he was a brother to me.”
I escorted a solemn Fran to the elevators, down to the lobby and to the front glass doors with a feeling that we had known each other for years. There was something so different, so endearing about this beautiful lady that made me want to protect her.
